Actual Condition of Physical, Psycho-Social Change of the Aged Life


Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the actual condition of physical, psycho-social change of the Aged life
Data were collected through structured interviews 250 subjects living in Kun San from April 5 to April 30, 1983.
Frequencies and percentile scores were analyzed to describe the fact, and the significance of intervariable differences was tested by Chi-Square method. The results of this study were as follows:
1. Physical health condition
Comparatively many of the Aged had no special disturbances in defecation function (74.8%) and urination function (72.4%) and 68.4%, 63.6%, 54.0% and 53.2% of the Aged had no special disturbance in their digestion, in audition, in diet, in teeth according to the order mentioned. 50% of respondents answered that they had disturbance in breathing usually.
The Aged said that they had many disturbance in body movement (61.200) and visual function (68%)
In digestion, audition, diet & body movement function, the difference between male and female respondents was significant.
In defecation, visualize, teeth, body movement & auditory function, the difference between Age group respondents was significant.
2. Psycho-social actual condition.
1) The most of the respondents think about death and dying occasionally or more (81.2%).
48.0% of the respondents consider that death is a natural phenomena. 67.39% of the respondents want their body to be burned.
2) 62.8% of the respondents consider that they are respected by society. 80.4% of the respondents consider that they are respected by home.
The difference between male and female respondents was not significant. 3) 68.8% of the respondents dependent on their sons in economic aspect.
4) 62.4% of the respondents answered that they are, lonely. The difference between male and female respondents was significant (df=2,x2=8.69, p<0.05). Among male respondents, significant difference between spouses and without spouses are revealed (df=2, x2=25.28, p<0.01).
On the other hand only 38.4% of respondents were content with their present life and they, had import in the following order: health (56.4%), money (22. 0%)
5) Most of the respondents lived in a large family system (71.6) and they desire to live in a large family system continually (72.4%).
6) As for the desire for a job. 29.2% and 20.8% of the Aged said that they would work or wanted to work respectively. Leisure hours are spent in helping house work (32.8%) and in chatting with Aged neighbors (27.6%). The difference of male & female was highly significant (df=7, x2=57.02, p<0.01).
7) 31.6% of the respondents replied the saddest thing in the life is the death of spouses. The difference of male & female was highly significant (df=9, x2= 26.35, p<0.01).
